This has been a round I have wanted to try for some time now but it seems to be constantly out of stock. That is until recently and now it’s available at several online locations. The Trophy bonded soft point bullet should make this load a very good field round suitable for both hunting and protection against dangerous animals.
In this test, I shot two rounds into bare gel and forgone the sheet metal portion. I wanted to see how this compared to the other testing I have done as far as penetration was concerned. If the Lucky Gunner test they conducted was any indication it should do well. In their test, all five rounds passed through both 16 inch blocks with no expansion. They also used the heavy clothing protocol, whereas I didn’t feel it was necessary since I don’t consider this round something a person would use in that capacity.
I got a five-shot average velocity of 1216fps with a high of 1231fps and a low of 1205fps. This came in short of the advertised velocity of 1275 by 59fps.
The first round had a surprising velocity of 1297fps. This was much higher then the five shot average by quite a bit. It penetrated to 30 inches and even expanded to .66 inches. The recovered weight was 180.5 grains. The second round’s velocity was closer to the average velocity and come in at 1213fps. This bullet did not expand, as I expected, and penetrated to 36 inches. The recovered weight was 181 grains.
While this load did pretty well, penetration wise, it was still out performed by the hard cast options. It did, on the other hand, beat the Underwood/ Lehigh Extreme penetrators by a fare amount. If you think about it, 3 feet of penetration is nothing to sneeze at and would probably be more then adequate. Although the second bullet didn’t technically expand it did show signs of starting and I would have to wonder if the velocity was closer to the advertised if it may have expanded similar to the first. Functioning was 100%.
