Test media: 10% Vyse Ballistics Gel, Clear Ballistics Gel.

Five shot velocity average: 1027 , 981fps
BB Calibration: 3.25 inches.

In this test, we introduce something new. First off this is the first test using real Vyse Professional Ballistics Gel. Vyse Ballistics Gelatin is a 250A porcine (pork) organic Gelatin specified by the FBI for use in testing terminal performance of ammunition. It can be purchased from Custom Collagen. I’m also using two new pistols. Both Sig’s, a P320 Compact, and P265. In this test, we take a look a the Federal Hydra-Shok 9mm. Not only did I shoot it in Vyse gel but also in some Clear Ballistics Gel so we can compare.

With the Sig 320, I got a five-shot average of 1027fps with a high of 1044fps and a low of 1014fps. This gives us an extreme spread of 30fps.

With the Sig 365 I got a five shot average velocity of 981fps with a high of 986fps and a low of 977fps for an extreme spread of 5fps.

Starting off with the Vyse gel and the P320 I shot two rounds in bare gel. The first round penetrated to 10.75 inches and expanded to .60 inches. The recovered weight was 122.4 grains and no velocity was recorded. Round number two hit the block at 1023fps and penetrated to 10.25 inches. It’s recovered weight was 123 grains and it expanded to .61 inches.

Repeating that process in the Clear gel the first round had a velocity of 1024fps and penetrated to 16.75 inches. It’s recovered diameter was .50 inches and the weight was 123.2 grains. The second round’s velocity was 1055fps and it traveled to 18.5 inches. The recovered weigh was 122.8 and it expanded to .51 inches.

Moving on to the heavy clothing covered Vyse gel, the first round from the P320 penetrated to 15 inches with a recovered weight of 124 grains and expanded to .52 inches. The second round expanded to .53 inches and penetrated to 13.5 inches. The recovered weigh was 124.8 grains. No velocity was recorded with either round.

Now the covered Clear gel. Round number one had a velocity of 1030fps and penetrated to 22 inches. It’s recovered weight was 123.3 grains and it expanded to .48 inches. At 1018fps the second round penetrated to 21.5 inches with a recovered weigh of 122.8 grains and expanded to .48 inches also.

Shooting into the bare Vyse gel with the P365 the first round had a velocity of 944fps and penetrated to 13 inches. The bullet expanded to .54 inches and had a recovered weight of 123.8 grains. The second bullet also expanded to .54 inches but penetrated to 12.75 inches. It’s recovered weight was 123.3 grains and the velocity was 967fps.

And lastly the P365 in the Clear gel. Round one hit the block at 966fps and penetrated to 18.75 inches. The recovered weight was 122.5 grains and it expanded to .49 inches. The last round shot had a velocity of 955 fps and went 18 inches into the blocks. It expanded to .48 inches and had a recovered weight of 122.6 grains.

All the rounds shot were from the same guns, same box of ammo and under the same conditions within an hour of each other. The only difference was the test media. All the bullets penetrated deeper and expanded less when shot in the Clear Ballistics Gel as compared to the Vyse Ballistics gel.

Across the board the penetration average, in the Clear gel was almost 7 inches more. The expansion of bullets in the Vyse gel was larger by an average of .07 inches.

  3. I’m a little surprised that they all expanded, even after heavy clothing from the shorter barrel. Back in the day, there were a lot of anecdotal stories about the Hydra-Shoks in 9mm being prone to clogging with fabric and failure to expand.
